Swim TEST, CAPSIZE DRILL & Small Boats Policy

Champion of the Thames now has a fleet of small boats that are available for club members. With this new equipment comes the need to look after the safety of our members and ensure the equipment is used properly and looked after. There are therefore a number of restrictions placed on who can use which boats and when.

Part of ensuring the safety includes making sure that ALL members who want to use sculls MUST have passed a swim test and capsize drill, NO EXCEPTIONS.

You will need to either provide details or evidence of an ARA (or equivalent) course that you have already attended, or complete one of the Champs courses that we will be running at Chesterton swimming pool.

PLEASE NOTE: If  you haven't done the swim test and capsize drill you will not be able to use any of the sculls, not even with a coach!!!

We plan to run regular courses throughout the year subject to demand. Please contact the rowing development officer to express interest using the contact form

Please note that completing the swim test and capsize drill doesn't on it's own allow you to use all of the sculls, you will also be assessed and informed of which boats you are alllowed to use (either with or without a coach on the bank) prior to be given relevant booking permission on the scheduler.
